SAINT-MALO

In the history :

In the VIth century, the old Gallo-Roman prefecture of Aleth (St-Servan) is evangelised by Saint Malo coming back from Wales. The close island where will to be built Saint-Malo is uninhabited.
At the time of the incursions of Norman, the inhabitants settle there, because the site is easier to defend. In 1144, bishop of Aleth is transferred there. The city belongs to bishop which divides it walls.
It remains isolated from the competitions of the region, itself declared as republic at the time of the League: "Neither French nor Britain, Malouin I am"

Saint-Malo and its surroundings, that German had transformed into a gigantic fortified camp, were the framework of a keen fight from 1st to August 14, 1944, leaving the city in ruins. It was restored accurately after the war.
